Moses Tunda Tatamy Trail

NOTE: Our next Monthly Meeting, on May 15, 2025, will feature significant discussions about the proposed trail.

On April 25, 2025, the all-volunteer 501(c)(3) nonprofit Friends of West Windsor Open Space (FOWWOS) was notified that it was awarded a "Green Acres" grant of around $268,000 to help fund the proposed  "Moses Tunda Tatamy Trail" - an initiative to convert a non-public access road into a public history/nature trail dedicated to the indigenous "Leni Lenape" and one of their most significant 18th century leaders. This trail would be developed  in partnership with the West Windsor Bicycle and Pedestrian Alliance and the Historical Society of West Windsor. The Township is also matching the grant amount through its existing "Open Space" funds.

PROJECT OVERVIEW: FOWWOS is spearheading a project to convert a pre-existing access road into a publicly accessible history and nature trail, titled “Tatamy’s Swamp Trail.” This road is currently used by West Windsor Township and passes through Township-owned woodland. The stream Duck Pond Run crosses this road in at least one location. The trail will span two segments: (1) Penn Lyle Road to North Post Road, and (2) a separate segment connecting the intersection of Jacob Drive and North Post Road to a Township-owned pump station, roughly 1,970 feet northwest of said intersection. A roughly 450-foot pathway, along North Post Road, will connect the two segments.

The completed interpretive trail will be lined with crushed gravel and cross North Post Road and Penn Lyle Road via high-visibility crosswalks and rapid flashing beacons. The trail will include seating for pedestrians as well as interpretive historical markers describing the history and significance of (1) the Township’s original residents, the indigenous “Leni Lenape,” and (2) the life and legacy of Moses Tunda Tatamy – a significant Leni Lenape leader of the 1700s, who is associated with this land.

The trail would run through the following blocks/lots. Please see the map below for a visual.
  1. Block 15, Lo 5
  2. Block 15, Lot 47.01
  3. Block 15, Lot 47.03
  4. Block 16.11, Lot 10
  5. Block 16.11, Lot 16
